Habit Stacking "After I [X], I will [Y]" — Build Your Chain
Build a Stack
Existing Habit (anchor)
Pour my morning coffee Sit down at my desk Finish lunch Get home from work Brush my teeth (night) Put phone on charger Open my laptop Park my car at work
New Habit to Add
Meditate for 2 minutes Write 3 things I'm grateful for Do 10 pushups Review my top 3 priorities Read 1 page of a book Drink a glass of water Take 3 deep breaths Journal for 2 minutes Stretch for 1 minute Review my calendar
Add to My Stack
How Habit Stacking Works Your brain already has strong neural pathways for existing habits. By linking a new behavior to an established one, you hijack that neural pathway instead of building one from scratch.
Formula "After I [CURRENT HABIT], I will [NEW HABIT]."
Example Morning Stack # After I... I will... 1 Turn off alarm Drink water on nightstand 2 Finish water Do 5 minutes of stretching 3 Finish stretching Meditate for 2 minutes 4 Finish meditation Write 3 gratitudes in journal 5 Close journal Start coffee + review today's plan
Rules for Success Rule Why Start absurdly small "Read 1 page" not "Read 30 minutes" Anchor must be daily and reliable If anchor doesn't happen, stack breaks Same time, same place Context triggers the chain Never miss twice Missing once is human; twice starts a new habit Stack max 3-4 new at once Too many = overwhelm = quit
