Why This Matters
DNS (Domain Name System) translates website names like "google.com" into IP addresses. Normally, your ISP handles DNS lookups — meaning they see every website you visit, even the ones you thought were private.
A good VPN routes DNS queries through its own servers. A DNS leak happens when those queries bypass the VPN and go directly to your ISP. Your traffic is encrypted, but your browsing history is exposed.
Common causes: misconfigured VPN clients, IPv6 leaks, and Windows "Smart Multi-Homed Name Resolution." This test checks for all of them.
How to Fix DNS Leaks
1. Switch to a VPN with built-in leak protection. Both NordVPN and Surfshark have automatic DNS leak protection enabled by default.
2. Disable IPv6 on your device. Many VPNs don't tunnel IPv6 traffic, causing leaks.
3. Use your VPN's DNS servers. In your VPN settings, ensure "Use VPN DNS" or similar option is enabled.
4. Check your browser. Some browsers (Chrome, Edge) use DNS-over-HTTPS which bypasses VPN DNS. Disable it or configure it to use your VPN's DNS.
